What are the possible benefits of being assertive?

There are many possible benefits from being assertive. Perhaps most important, you will feel that you are acting to take charge of things, rather than being a passive recipient of what other people may choose to do to you. In addition, you are likely to be perceived by others as a confident person when you are assertive, and they may give you more respect for your assertive behavior. To the extent you are assertive, you can often help drive decisions in directions that are beneficial for you. Sometimes by being assertive, you will help identify or elicit inherent conflicts or problems that should be dealt with sooner rather than later. Finally, when you are assertive, you may be modeling behavior that encourages other people to be assertive as well and thereby improves communication and relationships.
