What if I don’t know someone’s interests?

It can be easier than you think to make reasonable assumptions about another person’s interests. How can you do this? First, try putting yourself in that person’s shoes and anticipate what your interests would be if you were that person. Other good ways to figure out another person’s interests are: 1) ask them directly what they are trying to achieve; 2) observe the person’s actions to figure out their interests; 3) check with others who know something about the person; and 4) check the internet for information about the person. Remember, you need not obtain a perfect understanding of another person’s interests to be able to make reasonable assumptions that will help you deal more effectively with that person. Just listen, observe and refine your understanding as information becomes available.
